Hello Everybody

I have been studying and using tarot for about ten years. I started with Rider Waite, and I now use the Thoth deck. The book that has revolutionized my use and understanding of the Thoth deck is a book called The Crowley Tarot. Having used this deck and this book for several years now, I am much more confident and productive with my readings.

I have been studying the Kabbalah/Tree of Life in association with the Tarot symbols for years as well. I have, for countless hours, and days, sat researching, reading, sketching, writing, thinking, meditating, typing, organizing and formatting my research. It basically amounts to more information than insight, though breakthroughs do occur periodically. When they do, it's very exciting!

I've given you this background on me to give y'all an idea of where I'm at, so as not to waste anyone's time. I am researching for the long term goal of creating my own Tarot deck. The question that has been getting me for quite some time is this:

What could be considered the "true" associations of cards to paths in the tree? Or anything else for that matter... I do mean anything... card, character, number, number of cards, planet, sign, path, position, sephiroth, location and on... ?

Sure, there are other systems to draw on, astrology, chakras and so on, but how do we "truly" determine what goes where and why? I mean, really. REALLY...

The deeper implied question is: Just how subjective can the Tree of Life associations be? Is there a "one true" series of associations i.e. status-quo, modern contemporary Tarot? Or is this just one convenient, previously established subjectivity in objectivity/truth's clothing? Who says what these associations are or should be? huh? huh? huh?

I'd love any input or opinions on what people like from a deck, that is, for the purpose of getting a concise, specific, practically applicable reading. (That is what I am shooting for anyway.)

Maybe on a scale of 1 to 10 (hehe), you could rate what you value in a deck's symbolism. 1 being innovation and 10 being tradition, 5 being equal parts familiarity and newness in symbolism.

Thanks for your time and thoughts and energy! Bless and best of Fortune to you.

  • The Tree of Life is obviously not a real tree somewhere with real Tarot images on it so there is NO 'real' system to draw from.

All we can do is try to understand cosmic forces which are at play in our lives using whatever system experience teaches us to be most accurate.

I personally don't find the 'traditional' placements of the tarot with the paths to be helpful or relevant. I have my own understanding of the paths and therefore my own Tree of Life with different tarot on their paths. It's whatever works for YOU. The tarot and tree of life are just symbols to try and help you. Symbols can be interchanged depending on what you're looking for.

It would even make more sense to me if the tarot/path associations were different on each different. It would make more sense to me if there were different tarot on the paths in Atziluth than in Briah for example.
Another way to say that would be to say that depending on the what you are using the Tarot for should depend on what the card REALLY means.

Unfortunately it's a subjective experience. Take astrology, Mercury rules Virgo, but for me, Mercury and Saturn rule it. This isn't traditional so I keep this to myself more often than not. But if we look at the Hermit Tarot card which rules Virgo, we're reminded of the 'Saturnal' aspect of Mercury rather than the more traditional trickster messenger of the gods aspect. Also in terms of Virgo ruling the harvest, doesn't the Empress card seem appropriate too? The Moon Card demonstrates Pisces, but for me it will always demonstrate Cancer. Unless it works for you then its not 'real' for you. Making it real is making it personal in my opinion.

    As for
'Maybe on a scale of 1 to 10 (hehe), you could rate what you value in a deck's symbolism. 1 being innovation and 10 being tradition, 5 being equal parts familiarity and newness in symbolism. '

I don't use Thoth so I can't really comment. I find it too dark and too pretentious. It's not more difficult or anything like that. There seems to be a hidden consensus that the Thoth deck is only for 'advanced' readers. I agree 'newbies' would do well to not start with this deck but unless your own mind-set is geared toward the Thoth deck there's no greater point in reading with it then in reading Joe Bloggs Magic Tarot Deck of Pretty Flower and Happy Fairies (or whatever...). For someone else that deck would be even more beneficial than Thoth.
I like the rider-waite deck and so what I'm tryin to say is that everyone responds to a different part of the card. For me the symbols are reminders. I've done accurate readings with playing cards tho I find them too limited to mundane matters like jobs, falling in love etc, and not suitable for more spiritual questions.

    • Thank you for your thoughtful response!

I really appreciate your input. I think sometimes I just need that outside person's opinion because it is easy to get lost in your own thoughts about these systems that can be quite abstract. Just having you tell me to be subjective is very helpful! It makes it more palpable. I really like when you say that making it real means making it personal. This seems to be what more than a few folks think. I am taking this more to heart everyday. Thanks again!!!
      • no problem!

I think that the cards and kabbalic systems work on an inner plane, which is personal to you. Certainly my readings' accuracy has GREATLY improved since I've decided to 'throw away the textbooks' and just wing it on my own insight into the cards' meaning and through 'light' meditation on the cards. I don't mean sitting in a darkened room and trying to get some magickal insight into the card, just simply looking at say the Hermit card from my previous example and noticing that he's using his own light and his own staff and that the serpent goes ahead of him. It all tells me that he's grown in power from the Fool card where he is blinded by the sunshine, a dog playfully runs along with him into danger and his staff is quite literally carrying his 'baggage'. The hermit is a mature form of the Fool and can show that where in the Fool we lack experience, with the Hermit we've grown wiser and more experienced. It reminds me of the Sephiroth and Paths surrounding Binah, Chockmah and Da'ath to certain degrees. I would never 'limit' it to one sephirah though. Binah in turn links to Saturn, and the quest for knowledge and information as portrayed by the journey from Fool to Hermit is almost mercurial, it links us back to Virgo. This is why I believe that Virgo should be co-ruled by Saturn for example.
So when the Hermit card comes up in a reading it has a 'real'ness to it for me.

You could also imbue the cards with your own experiences. Conjure up the feelings of when someone cheated on you (for example), hold the emotions and thoughts of how you felt and then pour them into the the 3 of Swords (for example). Next time that card comes up it might no longer mean the words from the text book which might say "feelings of loneliness, betrayal or of hurt" which are nothing but adjectives. Suddenly the card conjures up a faster heartbeat, a knot in your stomach and certain anxiety, the card is now 'real' to you and not a set of strange symbols and a list of adjectives to go with it.

      • holographic universe ~ all systems (if well crafted) reflect all other systems ~ different people happen to be better at decoding certain levels, with certain boundaries/definitions

the information in your DNA is the same as
the information in your astrology chart is the same as
the information in the lines of your palm is the same as
the information in your Tarot spread is the same as
the information in your credit score is the same as
the information in the tea leaves at the bottom of your glass,
        etc., ad nauseum

        love all-ways,

  • For anyone reading this...
I meant to mention two other systems I think are of interest to this topic:

Hebrew Letters (and their meanings) and Alchemy

Along with Astrology, these two aspects seem pretty essential to the card symbol associations of the Tree. I understand that the Major Arcana is supposed to represent the stages of Alchemy (the spiritual kind), and every Major Arcana card is associated with the Hebrew letter of its path. Important? Probably. Any ideas/info on these welcome too.
    • I found the Haindl deck very helpful for me personally...but its all knew to me....I'm one of those who read from the back of the book and go forward though, ...I don't know..once again...its who's reading and using your own intuition. That deck I find helpful, as it has the Hebrew letters, Astrological signs, Ruines signs,I Ching, etc, right on them. I simply move with intuition.
